The reason is one instant: a well pump asks for 6,762 W at start-up on its own, against 2,645 W for everything on the list above put together. That start-up figure is a published locked-rotor rating for an induction motor of this size. A sump pump’s own measured locked-rotor current is unusually low for a motor its size — well under the NEC table a lot of sizing advice still quotes. Is my pump the pump this list was ranked against?
Check the amps on it, not the horsepower. The 920 above is a Liberty 280-series 1/2 hp at its published full-load current — 8.0 A at 115 V — and this record’s own band runs 598 to 1,116 on the same basis: a Liberty 250-series 1/3 hp at 5.2 A at the bottom, a shaded-pole Zoeller M53 of the same nominal class at 9.7 A at the top, with no average of the two describing a real pump. One thing about all three figures: they are strictly volt-amps rather than watts. We have found no power factor published for these motors by either maker, so amps times volts is everything the record can hold — and volt-amps is what an inverter has to supply in any case, which is why the check made above is still the right one.
Why is the start-up figure so much lower than the sizing tables say?
Because of the motor, and because the table is not a measurement. Liberty prints full-load and locked-rotor amps on the same line of the same sheet: 8.0 A and 23 A on the 1/2 hp, a ratio of 2.88, and 5.2 A and 8 A on the 1/3 hp, a ratio of 1.54. NEC Table 430.251(A) puts a 1/2 HP 115 V motor at 58.8 A instead — a flat six times its own full-load table — but that table’s header limits it to sizing breakers, controllers and disconnects. It is a selection envelope, not something measured on a pump. The motors in these pumps are shaded-pole and permanent-split-capacitor; neither is a capacitor-start design, and neither draws a capacitor-start inrush. A 1/2 HP well pump, by contrast, really does draw 58.8 A at start on its own maker’s published figure — same horsepower, different machine, and the envelope fits that one. Size a sump pump against the envelope and you refuse stations that start it.
