Will a power station run a mini fridge, and for how long?

The running load is trivial and the start is not. A 4.5 cu ft compact fridge carries a rating plate of 161 VA, which is under a tenth of most machines’ continuous output, but the compressor inside it has a locked-rotor rating of 2,530 VA for a fifth of a second. Of the 12 published US machines in this library, 4 refuse this load and 1 is downgraded — every one of them on the start-up, none of them on running watts.
For how long is the harder half, and this site will not give you an hour figure for it. The rating plate is an apparent-power ceiling rather than a measured draw, and the certified annual energy for this class works out at an average of about 26 W — two numbers from two different test conditions, which is why multiplying either one by a battery would produce a confident answer to nothing.

The load is one part in two of continuous output and the machine still refuses it, because the surge ceiling is where the check lands.
This is the cleanest example on the site of why a verdict has to be computed rather than looked up. Every one of those rows would pass a comparison of running watts against continuous output, and four of the twelve fail anyway. It is also why buying by capacity alone goes wrong at the small end: a 300 Wh machine can hold a compact fridge for hours once it is turning, and never get it turning.
Why there is no hour figure on this page
Ask any calculator how long a battery runs a mini fridge and it will multiply the rating plate by a duty cycle. We did that too, and it was wrong by a factor of five. The duty cycle on this record used to be 0.85, borrowed from a manufacturer’s statement about full-size refrigerators. Against the rating plate that implies about 1,199 kWh a year, while the certification database lists 226–228 kWh for twenty-nine compact models of this capacity. The figure was corrected on 2026-08-03 and the duty cycle recomputed to 0.18, but the gate on hour figures stayed shut, because the two remaining terms still come from different test conditions: a rating plate is apparent power declared by the maker, and the certified annual energy is measured behind a closed door at a fixed ambient temperature.
It depends entirely on the start-up, not the running watts. Of the twelve published US machines in this library, four refuse a 4.5 cu ft compact fridge and one is downgraded — all of them on the compressor’s 2,530 VA locked-rotor start, none on continuous output, where the load is under 11 percent everywhere. Machines that clear the start hold it comfortably afterwards.
