How much power does a balcony solar setup actually produce?

Far less than the sticker, and the size of the gap is set by mounting rather than by panel quality. A panel’s rated watts are measured at one irradiance and one cell temperature in a lab; a real balcony array delivers that figure stepped down by five things in turn — which way it faces, what angle it sits at, what shades it and when, how hot the cells get, and the ceiling of whatever it feeds.
A railing-mounted vertical panel facing away from the sun can produce a small fraction of what the same panel makes lying at a good angle on a roof. The hardware is identical; the mounting is the variable, and it is the one nobody quotes.
The five step-downs, largest first
- Orientation. The single largest term for a balcony, because you do not get to choose it. A balcony faces where the building faces, and an array pointed away from the sun’s daily arc loses a large share of its annual yield before anything else is considered.
- Tilt. Panels bolted flat to a vertical railing are at ninety degrees to the ground. That is a poor angle in summer and — this surprises people — a reasonable one in winter at high latitude, where the sun is low and snow does not settle on glass that steep.
- Shading. The railing itself, the balcony above yours, and the building opposite. Partial shade on a single panel does not scale the output down in proportion; a shaded cell string can drag its whole panel down far more than its share of the area.
- Cell temperature. Output falls as the cells heat, and a panel clamped flat against a wall with no air behind it runs hotter than one on standoffs. This is a real loss on the hottest, sunniest afternoons — precisely when the rated figure was measured.
- The ceiling downstream. Whatever the panels feed — a microinverter, a balcony battery, a portable power station — has a maximum input, and past that point extra panel watts are simply discarded.

That last row is the arithmetic most balcony guides skip. The array the engine recommends here is 600 W of rated panel against an input ceiling of 3600 W — so the limit is not the electronics here, it is how many panels a balcony can physically hold and at what angle. On a portable power station with a much lower input ceiling, the opposite is true and the third panel earns nothing.
How to get a number for your own balcony
We will not publish a kilowatt-hours-per-day figure for "a balcony", because the honest version of that number needs your latitude, your azimuth, your tilt and your shading, and every one of them is yours. What we can do is give you the arithmetic and the equipment ceilings. Start from the daily watt-hours you want to displace, divide by the peak-sun-hours your location gets in the worst month you care about, and then discount hard for orientation and shading before comparing the result against the panel area a balcony actually has.
