Can you bring a portable power station on a plane?

Almost certainly not, unless it is one of the very small ones. Passenger rules for lithium batteries are written in watt-hours per battery, not in kilograms or litres: there is a threshold below which a battery travels in the cabin without asking, a band above it that needs the operator’s approval, and above that band passenger aircraft do not carry them at all. Most power stations sit far above the whole scale.

Two further points decide more cases than the number does. Spare lithium batteries — which is what a power station is — belong in carry-on and not in checked baggage. And the rule that binds you is the one your operator publishes for your flight on the day, not a figure on a website.

Why the limit is in watt-hours

A lithium cell that fails releases energy that was stored in it, so the quantity that predicts how bad a failure is, is stored energy — which is what a watt-hour measures. Weight is a poor proxy because chemistries differ in energy density, and volume is worse. That is why the printed limits are watt-hour figures and why the airline desk will ask for a watt-hour number rather than for a weight. If your device only shows amp-hours and a voltage, multiply them: amp-hours times volts gives watt-hours, and that is the figure to declare.

The pattern is unambiguous: the class of product starts well above where passenger allowances end. A power bank in the low hundreds of watt-hours is a plausible travel item; a power station is not, and the honest planning assumption is that it goes by ground transport or stays home. If your trip genuinely needs one at the destination, shipping it as cargo under the applicable dangerous-goods rules is a different process with its own paperwork, and it is the one worth investigating.
