Why won’t my power station start charging with just one solar panel?

Because your panel’s voltage at maximum power sits below your port’s stated minimum, and the tracker has nothing to lock onto — it never starts, whether or not the panel is wired correctly. This is the mirror image of the well-known cold-morning failure: that one is a voltage ceiling, checked separately from this floor, and this site’s engine treats the two very differently.

The usual fix is the same move that causes the ceiling problem elsewhere: put a second panel in series and the array’s voltage doubles, clearing the floor on the one real port in this library where it binds.

A window has two edges, and they are not equally strict

A charging window is bounded above and below, and this engine checks the two edges separately. Past the top, the tracker cannot hold the exact peak — output droops, but the port keeps taking what it can, and in this engine’s code that outcome can only ever soften to a warning, never an outright refusal. Under the bottom, there is nothing to track at all, and this engine is configured to call that illegal outright — the same severity as a voltage that could damage the machine, not a lesser one.

The fix is the move that causes the OTHER problem

Series wiring adds voltage; it is the only wiring change that can raise Vmp at all, which is why a second panel in series — not a second panel in parallel — is what clears a floor. On this port it costs almost nothing: the ceiling is tall enough that doubling voltage barely dents the headroom left over.

Parallel does not fix this

Wiring a second panel in parallel instead adds current, not voltage — the array’s Vmp stays exactly where one panel alone left it, so a parallel pair fails the same floor a single panel does. Series and parallel solve different problems, and on this one only series works.

Probably not. If its voltage at maximum power sits below your port’s stated minimum, the tracker has nothing to lock onto — no fault, no bad connection, just an array that has not reached the port’s floor yet. Wiring a second panel in series, not in parallel, is the usual fix.
How do I know if this is my problem?
Compare your panel’s Vmp, printed on its label, against your station’s stated minimum charging voltage, published on its own record. If Vmp sits below that number, this is why nothing happens; if it sits above, look elsewhere — a wiring fault or a connector that is not actually seated.
Why doesn’t a low-voltage problem show a warning the way a high-voltage one does?
Because the two are not the same severity in this engine. Too high a voltage can damage a station’s input stage, so this site treats crossing that ceiling as strictly as it can; too low a voltage wastes the panel’s output but risks nothing electrically, and on most ports this engine treats that more leniently. The one port in this library configured to block it outright is also the one with the tallest ceiling — which is what makes the fix cheap there.
